DPJ: About Me
Hi, I'm David Perez, Jr. I'm in the middle, and you guessed it - that's the great David Perez, Sr., to my right, along with my brother Seb. Welcome to the site with all my written work.
I was lucky enough to write for Phenom Media so my site will always link to my pieces there, but you will see everything and anything from anywhere else I go in the sports world here to.
As the picture suggests, I love football and the intricate roster construction required to be successful in the NFL. My interest in baseball, however, taps even more into my mathematical mind than my football mind does. I started collecting baseball cards soon after, and the backs of those cards introduced me to the fascinating world of sports statistics. From the number of home runs that Nelson Cruz hit as a Texas Ranger to Troy Tulowitzki’s OBP of .432 in 2014, I loved consuming this information. It was so important to me as someone who excelled in math as a kid, and applying math to my biggest passion sparked an interest in sports statistics that continues to grow today.
I found Michael Lewis’s Moneyball at the age of 10, and Statcast soon after, so analytics are a huge part of my baseball-watching diet. One of my fondest memories is when I argued in favor of Jacob DeGrom winning the Cy Young Award in 2018. While others contended that his win-loss record of 10-9 was worse than Aaron Nola’s 17-6 record, it was DeGrom’s lower FIP by 1 point and lower ERA by 0.6 that ultimately won him the award. DeGrom was the better pitcher on an individual basis that year, and I needed to establish which stats showed his dominance.
I actually love basketball too, but that took a big hit when Paul George snapped his leg, as the Pacers are my team. I miss the days when the Knicks played the Pacers at the end of each season and refs rarely ever blew the whistle (except for that ridiculous four-point play). Gotta say, I've enjoyed watching Tyrese Haliburton lately, so I may talk about him too!
